ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR / CONDUCTOR
Starting Pay: $29.47/hour. (as a trainee)
Bonus: $1,500 upon successful completion of 8–10-week classroom training and passing the Assistant Conductor LIRR written exam.
Job Duties
- Supervise and coordinate train crew activities (Conductor role); assist in these duties (Assistant Conductor role).
- Perform groundwork: lining switches, locking/unlocking derail devices, applying/releasing/testing brakes, coupling/uncoupling cars, connecting/disconnecting air hoses, installing telemetry devices, flagging crossings, and signaling Engineer.
- Ensure safe delivery of freight and accurate preparation/communication of records and data.
- Notify Engineer of switching orders; transmit information via electronic systems, radio, or hand signals.
- Prepare and transmit reports, waybills, car placement info, and other documentation.
- Inspect cars and locomotives for couplings, air hoses, brakes, load securement, and general condition; report defects.
- Perform minor repairs on cars and locomotives (e.g., couplers, air hoses, brake shoes).
- Train and coach crew members on safety and compliance.
- Supply locomotives and vehicles with fuel, tools, and safety equipment.
- Operate company vehicles safely and conduct inspections per policy.
- Adhere to FRA, TSA, and company regulations and safety procedures.
- Respond effectively to emergencies and changing conditions.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; Associate degree preferred.
- Experience in at least one area: U.S. military, skilled trade, outdoor work (construction/labor), CDL-A/B truck driving, warehousing, or heavy equipment operation.
- Ability to interpret hand signals and track flags.
- Must be fluent in English
- Regular and timely attendance; 24/7 on-call availability required.
- Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred).
- Must pass required certifications: LIRR Assistant Conductor Certification, Book of Rules test, GCOR Certification, and periodic recertifications.
- Ability to promote to Conductor and Engineer within required timeframe.
Career Path & Pay Progression
- Assistant Conductor Trainee: $29.47/hour + $1,500 bonus after training/exam.
- Conductor: Pay increase + potential $1,500 bonus upon promotion.
- Locomotive Engineer: $40.16/hour + quarterly bonuses.
